A.O. Smith Plans to Sell Engineered Storage Products Group
------------------------------------------------------------
MILWAUKEE, Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- A.O. Smith Corporation
(NYSE: AOS) today announced record 1999 earnings from
continuing operations of $50.3 million or $2.11 per share,
a 26 percent increase over last year's earnings of $40.7
million or $1.68 per share.
Record sales from continuing operations for 1999 were $1.04
billion, more than 34 percent higher than 1998 sales of
$775 million.
At the same time, the company announced its intention to
sell its Storage & Fluid Handling Technologies platform,
thus exiting the fiberglass pipe and storage tank
businesses.
"Consistent with the company's strategy to expand its
presence in the electric motor and water heating markets
and to be a consolidator in each of those industries, we
have decided to divest the Storage & Fluid Handling
platform,"
according to Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Robert
J. O'Toole.
The Storage & Fluid Handling platform reported 1999 sales
of $118 million, a decline of 18 percent compared with 1998
sales of $142.8 million. Sales were adversely affected by
continuing weakness in the fiberglass, dry storage, and
agricultural markets. The platform generated a loss from
operations equivalent to $.04 per share in 1999, compared
with earnings of $.16 per share in 1998.
The company has booked an after-tax charge in the fourth
quarter of approximately $7 million to cover the anticipated
costs associated with the disposition of the Storage &
Fluid Handling platform. The charge was equivalent to $.29
per share. The combined loss from discontinued operations
was equivalent to $.33 per share for all of 1999.
Sales of $32 million for the fourth quarter were slightly
higher than 1998. The platform broke even in the quarter,
compared with $.02 per share earned in the fourth quarter
of 1998.
The platform consists of two operating companies. Engineered
Storage Products Company, with headquarters in DeKalb, Ill.,
manufactures storage tanks for industrial, municipal, and
agricultural applications. The company's aluminum,
epoxy-coated steel, and glass-fused-to-steel tanks are
used to store a wide variety of liquid and dry materials,
including potable water, waste water, plastics, minerals,
and foodstuffs.
In addition to DeKalb, the company operates plants in
Parsons, Kan., and Winchester, Tenn., and employs
approximately 475 people.
The other operating unit, Smith Fiberglass Products Company,
with headquarters in Little Rock, Ark., manufactures
fiberglass pipe and fittings in sizes ranging from one
inch up to 48 inches in diameter. The company serves the
chemical processing, petroleum production, and service
station markets.
Smith Fiberglass operates two plants in Little Rock as well
as manufacturing facilities in Wichita, Kan., and Harbin,
China. The division employs approximately 400 people.

Portasilo Handles Sewage Sludge Granule Disposal Problem
------------------------------------------------------------
Portasilo has successfully completed another project for the
storage and handling of dried sewage granules at Pyewipe Sludge
Treatment Centre (STC), Grimsby on behalf of Purac Ltd. This
STC is at the forefront of Anglian Waters sludge strategy.
Portasilo's contract included the supply of storage silos
and mechanical handling equipment for dried sewage granules.
The plant consists of sludge granule storage silos, which
are filled and emptied by a series of mechanical conveyors.
Dried sewage sludge dust is potentially explosive, hence the
silos are fitted with explosion relief hatches with break
wires to shut down the infeed and outfeed systems in the
event of an explosion.
In addition to the problems of potential explosions, the
sewage sludge granules also present the risk of spontaneous
combustion during storage. Temperature of the granules is
therefore monitored by a multi-point temperature probe
within each silo. Should a high temperature be detected at
any one of these points, the silo is flooded with Carbon
Dioxide to render the atmosphere inert inside the silo.
The atmosphere is monitored for the product of combustion.
Carbon monoxide levels are monitored on a continuous basis.
Should high levels be detected, the inert gas flooding
system is also triggered. This safety has been developed
by Portasilo specially for this application.
Bridging in the silos is a possibility. These events are
negated by fitting of the patented and award winning
Rotoflo discharge valve. These units discharge to a bagging
system via a reversible screw conveyor, which can also
discharge into open topped vehicles via a telescopic
loading spout.

Siemens Canada Plans to Acquire Milltronics Ltd.

$335 Million Deal to Strengthen Siemens' Position in Process
Automation and Instruments
MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO-- January 21, 2000 -- Siemens Canada
Limited and Milltronics Ltd. (TSE: MLS) jointly announced
today that Siemens will make an all-cash offer to acquire all
of the outstanding common shares of Milltronics for $21 per
share. This price represents a 76% premium to the stocks'
closing price of $11.90 on the Toronto Stock Exchange on
January 20, 2000. Milltronics has approximately 16 million
common shares (on a fully diluted basis), yielding an aggregate
transaction value of approximately $335 million.
The take-over bid will be made on or before February 4, 2000,
and is expected to close, subject to regulatory approvals,
as soon as possible, and in any event no later than May 30,
2000. With $119 million in annual sales and operations in
12 countries, Milltronics is a leader in ultrasonic level
measurement technology for process automation.

in strategic businesses that are competitive on a global

GLI AccuChlor Residual Chlorine Measurement System
------------------------------------------------------------
The AccuChlor system uses an EPA approved amperometric
measurement technique to provide highly accurate free or total
chlorine measurements. The unique construction of the measuring
cell provides stable and repeatable measurements from extremely
low ppm ranges to as high as 50 ppm of free or total chlorine.
This system uses ordinary 5% food grade distilled white
vinegar for pH adjustment. In addition to being extremely
inexpensive, distilled white vinegar prevents fouling by cleaning

My name is Roshan Mohammed and represent R-Tech Industries, a
company in Trinidad. I must develop a method of treating my
waste water and disposing of it pretty soon. I would be most
grateful if you can assist me by giving me a method as well
as a quote for any of the chemicals need in the method that
can be supplied by you company. Here is the problem:

Mr. Sudeep need help with effluent from potatoes:
We use water in three stages to wash potatoes in our snack
food mfg. unit, first coarse wash, second after peeling and
third hot wash of cut potatoes. When this water is discharged
into the municipal disposal we are having lots of problems
with the authorities on disposal as the effluent is high BOD,
more than 4000 and high tds more than 4000 again we learn that
there are technologies that in addition to offering conventional
effluent treatment can also offer recycled water as a cost
effective option.
If any company has any solution or experience with similar
application, we shall be keen on exploring immediate business
opportunities.

Mr. Powell wants to get the caramel out:
A trade waste comprising of caramel rinse water is impacting
on our UV disinfection system. Anyone know of a cheap treatment
method to deal with this?? We've looked at chlorination, bleaching,
UV and peroxide, ozonation, GAC etc...
At the moment we're looking at membranes to remove the problem,
does anyone out there have any experience with a similar scenario
as this?
